Appeal to the People Fallacy

Keep in mind, it’s the strength of your belief that matters here. First, its what everyone agrees. If you believe strongly its correct, you’ve committed the fallacy of the appeal to the people. Secondly, if you think, too strongly, someone is mistaken because its not what everyone agrees, you’re mistaken, again.

Agreement with popular opinion is not necessarily a reliable sign of truth, and to disagree with popular opinion is not necessarily a reliable sign of truth, but to do so with enthusiasm, you’ve made the error.

The ‘too strongly’ is important in the description of the fallacy because what most everyone believes is, for that reason, somewhat likely to be true, all things considered. However, the fallacy occurs when this degree of support is overestimated.

Case in point: Years later, I told a fiance I didn't want to get married. She was floored. Call me old-fashioned, it messed with my sense of valor that she supported me. (She would have bought the toilet paper and the hamburgers, too, jerk!)

David Tracy introduces us to the power of resistance; if we can’t change the facts about the world we live in, the way we see those facts can make a difference. Tracy says we put in the place of a group judgment, the judgment of a larger society.

Worshipping together, endeavoring jointly to discern the will of God, if honestly done, will, frequently, lead to that result.
