God forbade...must reading!

Paulo Friere

Sao Paulo, Brazil 1921-1997.

Believed the oppressed have to play a role in their own liberation. They must be their own example in the struggle for their own redemption. Likewise, the oppressors who authentically commit themselves to the people must re-examine themselves constantly.

Friere steers away from a ‘banking system’ where the student is seen as an empty account filled by the teacher. It attempts to control thinking and action, leading students to adjust to the world and inhibits their creative power.

Friere re-examines the teacher-student dichotomy. He encourages a teacher who learns and a learner who teaches. The teacher must be humble enough to be disposed to re-learn what he already thinks he knows. The educator must not be allowed to degenerate into authoritarianism; not to win the people over, but to fight along side them for the recovery of their stolen humanity.
