Social networking
Give it up. Your social network, that is. Your social network can be the best thing in developing a successful career and social life. More importantly, you are in service to others. Too often, networking means 'give and take' . "You owe me one" is commonly heard.
If you've ever had someone introduce you to someone and, immediately expect to be repaid? You've probably felt obligation, or maybe resentment. This is not networking, but brokering.
Darcy Rezac registered the term 'positive networking', discovering what you can do for someone else. Networking is not about you and how others can help you, but about others and how you can help them. It alleviates pressure and the hard sell. They don't have to sell themselves at a networking event. It encourages concern for your reputation as a connector, someone who is trusted, respected and liked.
Rezac and Tim Sanders believe giving generously your contacts and knowledge without anything, in return, is smart, sound business strategy.
It costs nothing to give of yourself, it's remembered, others are more likely to do the same for you. The best way to cultivate, develop and nurture a network is through the generosity of giving it away.
