Conscience
When people try to forgive themselves, they play two roles, at the same time, wrongdoer and forgiver. The duality makes it hard to come to grip with your true self.
Self condemnation can be never-ending. You can get away from other's 'bitchin', not so easy with your own conscience chattering accusation.
We can be very critical of ourselves. When we disappoint ourselves, we see our own deep flaws.
When we hear the voice of our conscience, we hear the voices of wronged others chiming in.
We, not only, have hurt them and ourselves, we've irritated nature, violated social norm, sinned against God.
A guilty conscience puts pressure on us. It seems easier to forgive others than ourselves.
When someone goes against their self-concept, by what they've said or done, a modified self-concept causes discomfort that takes time and effort to resolve.
