Reasons of the Heart
Far better than relying only on reason is to admit man's condition is dual. No one can function without reason, but without faith you would be inconceivable to yourself. Pascal says faith is as dependent on the heart as reason is to the mind. The heart means not just emotions and feelings, intuition, the immediate grasp, comprehension and understanding without the full use of reason. Through the heart we learn truths reason would never touch.
It was a century of genious and genious does not like to acknowledge its limitations. Who is the wise man ready to hang himself because he doesn't know how to face God? Why make us hate our nature? Our condition is not as unhappy as they would make us think.
