Leisure Life
The sociology of leisure is a study of how we organize our free time. Leisure is hard to define, but usually includes sport, tourism and game playing. More recent studies move away from a work-leisure relationship to focus on leisure and culture.
Studies find patterns are not completely explained by income, occupation or education. Substantial influences are your family, your age and other factors.
In the second half of the 20th century leisure had, often, been seen as a relatively unimportant, minor societal feature. Now, leisure has come to mean a major social institution, particularly in Western societies.
The relation between work and leisure can become unclear. Research indicates some find work skills to help with their hobbies and some use leisure activities to advance their work.
Over time, emphasis in leisure has shifted from work-leisure among well-researched majorities, to the study of minorities and a balance of leisure and culture.
