Girl Teen Stress
While girls are surpassing boys academically, they may be paying a high price for their success.
A 1992 report found 12th grade girls are almost twice as likely to report not liking school very much, compared to girls of the 80’s. Higher levels of psychological stress were found in adolescent girls than boys. Stronger reactions to stress than boys, and higher rates of depression and eating disorders than boys.
Patterns have emerged from preliminary findings indicate that,
Higher levels of school stress are significantly related to higher levels of depression.
High quality, close relationships with significant others are related to higher levels of well being.
Older students feel higher levels of stress, but show higher levels of self esteem.
Belle Liang, Ph.D., lead investigator of the study hopes to provide a richer, more comprehensive picture of the development of adolescent girls.
