Apathy

Apathy is a state of indifference, the suppression of concern, excitement, motivation and passion. Apathetic has an absence of interest or concern about emotional, social or physical life, and may be insensitive or sluggish.

The Stoics used the word apatheia to show a desirable state of indifference to events and things outside of control, responsible for only own representations and judgements.

Prescott described an apathy in his nature that led him to leave events to take their own course.

Another popular Christian perspective condemns apathy as a deficiency of love and devotion to God and his works, or sloth, listed among the seven deadly sins.

After WW1 the term  'shell shocked'  referred to soldiers in trenches amid bombings and machine gun fire, seeing battlefields strewn with dead and maimed comrades, developed a numbness and indifference to normal social interaction.

Novelist John Dos Passos wrote apathy develops when subjected to stimuli too intense or too complicated to cope with, the cure comprehension.

Apathy can be a psychological problem for the depressed. They get a sense that nothing matters, they lack the will to go on and are unable to care about the consequences. The depressed who cannot seem to make themselves do anything, can't complete anything and are not excited about seeing loved ones.

Its been said the opposite of love is not hate, but apathy. The opposite of apathy is flow, a response to an easy challenge having the matched skills.
